Sproman v. Matchok

Verdict for Plaintiff in the Amount of $860,000

Dec 21, 2011 (As reported by the New Jersey Law Journal, Vol. 207, No.11, Suits and Deals, Monday March 12, 2012)

A Somerset County jury awarded $860,000 to a Hillsborough man injured from being struck by a car. William Sporman was hit on July 20, 2007 in the parking lot of Harrah’s Resort Casino in Atlantic City, where he had been celebrating his 21st birthday. A car driven by Matchok knocked him down, worsening a genetic defect in his back – a missing pedicle on the L5-S1 vertebra that had been asymptomatic. Sporman underwent spinal decompression and fusion surgery for pain and numbness. He still has pain that causes weakness and reduced range of motion. Though not employed at the time, Sporman claimed at $628,241 wage loss for a delayed start to his working life, decreased job options and lost work from anticipated earlier retirement. On Dec. 21 at trial before Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman the jury awarded $860,000: $360,000 for lost wages and $500,000 in non-economic damages. Defense lawyer was Edward Martin of Martin & Simmons in Whitehouse Station.
